Weights are the starting point for every steel order: estimating quantities, comparing offers on a like-for-like basis and checking a delivery against its paperwork. This guide brings together nominal weights for Iranian rebar from 8 to 32 mm, cross-section areas, and weights for IPE beams, all taken from the Ahan Asa product catalog, plus a formula you can use on site without a chart.

What determines rebar weight?

Nominal rebar weight depends on diameter only. Plain and ribbed bars, and every grade from A2 (Aj340) to A4 (Aj500), share the same nominal weight for a given diameter, because it is calculated from a circular cross-section at the density of steel, about 7850 kg/m³. Ribs do not change the nominal figure. The rebar in our catalog is produced to the Iranian national standard INSO 3132 and supplied in 12 m bars.

For several bars, multiply the single-bar area by the number of bars: four 16 mm bars give about 8.04 cm². In Iran, a chart of steel areas for one to many bars is known on site as the "Stahl table". Bar selection and any substitution remain the structural engineer's call.

A formula for site use

kg per metre ≈ diameter × diameter ÷ 162 (diameter in mm)

The constant 162 comes from the circle area multiplied by steel density, and the approximation is close enough for site estimates. Examples: 12 mm gives about 0.89 kg/m and 25 mm about 3.86 kg/m. For cut bars, multiply by total length: forty 7.5 m pieces of 16 mm bar weigh about 473 kg.

Nominal weight versus weighbridge weight

Chart values are nominal. Real bars may weigh slightly more or less within the mass tolerance of the product standard, which is why steel is normally invoiced on weighbridge weight. When estimating an import order, add a sensible margin and reconcile with the delivered weight.

Summary

Rebar weight depends on diameter alone and is quickly estimated with "diameter² ÷ 162". Full specifications for each size are on the product pages for A3 rebar, A4 rebar and the wider rebar range. For a quotation based on your bar schedule, contact us.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 12 m bar of 16 mm rebar weigh?

Nominally 1.578 kg per metre, so about 18.94 kg for a 12 m bar, regardless of grade.

What is the quick formula for rebar weight?

Weight per metre in kg is approximately the diameter in mm squared, divided by 162. For 20 mm: 20 × 20 ÷ 162 ≈ 2.47 kg/m.

Do A3 and A4 rebar of the same diameter weigh the same?

Yes. Nominal weight depends only on diameter; grade changes strength, not weight.

Is steel invoiced on nominal or actual weight?

Usually on actual weighbridge weight, because real bars can deviate slightly from nominal within the tolerance set by the product standard.
