Alloy & tool steel
1.2344 hot-work tool steel (X40CrMoV5-1 / H13)
Chromium-molybdenum-vanadium hot-work tool steel for die-casting, extrusion and forging dies; round bar.
1.2344, EN ISO 4957 name X40CrMoV5-1, is one of the most widely used hot-work tool steels; its American equivalent is H13. The Iranian market calls it 'hot-work steel 2344'.
About 5 % chromium with molybdenum and vanadium gives it resistance to softening at high temperature, toughness and resistance to heat-checking: the combination dies in contact with hot metal need.

Mass %, ranges of EN ISO 4957; the heat certificate of the delivered material is what the contract relies on.
Hardness and delivery state
Supplied annealed at 229 HB maximum for machining; the part is then hardened and tempered. Round bar is usually cut to the length or weight you need.
Heat treatment
After machining: hardening (usually vacuum hardening with a gas quench, or oil) and at least two tempers. The working hardness is chosen for the die type; state it on the drawing or in the request.
Typical uses
- Aluminium and zinc die-casting dies
- Extrusion dies and tooling
- Forging die inserts
- Hot shearing and punching tools
Delivery forms and size ranges
- Round bar
- Ø 20–300 mm
The ranges the market offers, not a stock list. Rounds above about 100 mm are usually forged and traded in diameter bands.
Sizes and weights
Nominal weights at a density of 7.80 kg/dm³ (1.2344). The actual weight is weighed, and tool steel is usually sold by the weight of the cut piece.
